Furnas
Surrounded by Azaleas and Camellias and situated 46 kms from Ponta
Delgada in the Furnas valley in the grounds of a remarkable
botanical park and garden. Hotel Terra Nostra was built in the
thirties with a superb new wing recently added. The
"art deco" style of architecture and furnishings have been
maintained throughout.
The new
wing includes a heated glass roofed swimming pool with a poolside bar and
wide sun bathing terraces. A
charming period bar and a restaurant which serves "cozido", the
dish cooked in the hot lava, almost daily, completes the hotel amenities.
In
the park to the rear of the hotel is a thermal water pool which has
medicinal properties particularly therapeutic for rheumatic complaints and
skin problems. The slightly yellowy coloured water is piped from a hot
spring about 1000 meters away and enters the pool at around 38 degrees
centigrade.
More than 90 species
of sub tropical plants and trees grow in the park, each thoughtfully
labelled for the non initiated. About
10 minutes drive out of the valley is the 18 hole golf course.
Our
opinion
A fascinating and very different Hotel; here one can walk, play golf,
swim, play tennis or wander through the amazing botanical gardens.
Although it appears on many excursions as a lunching point,
the peaceful ambience of the Hotel and the superb service together
with the activities provided, justify a week or ten days visit in its own
right.
